about

My Opa (dutch for grandpa) died this past Tuesday Morning (July 21st). I had the privilege of being able to be the last person to speak with him before he passed. I spent the next day thinking a lot about what death, for a christian man, really means. I wrote this song the next day, and my dad requested that I record it for him as well as others who are grieving for him right now.

For my Opa: Joe Vandenberg

If you donate any money, specify "for charity" if you'd like the money to go to his favorite charity, or "for Deanna" if you'd like it to go to his grand-daughter's ministry overseas.

lyrics

You’ve outgrown the womb of this earth
hold your breath while the universe gives birth
All the hearts around you, are shakin’ ’til they break
cause all of us we feel it: the sting of the labour pain

Miracles exist, I know it
‘Cause every life is from a death
It’s a bitter sweet goodbye, 'cause every
death brings forth new life

Breath in, but breath out, cause every breath is borrowed
The Lord gives and takes, but blessed are those who sorrow
And blessed are the children, for they know their dependence
And blessed are the dead, they know the pow’r of resurrection

Miracles exist, I know it
‘Cause every life is from a death
It’s a bitter sweet goodbye, 'cause every
death brings forth new life

New wine don’t belong in the old wine skins
New life don’t belong in the shell of an old man
you cannot contain the blessed weight of our God's goodness
The weak are given strength when they surrender their excuses

Take your last breath
Oh what a release
Hallelujah
trade your breath for perfect peace

Take your first breath
oh let heaven sing
take your first steps
in the light of the redeemed

Miracles exist, I know it
Cause God's still raisin’ from the dead
like day gives birth to night, when you
breath your last you come alive
breath your last you come alive
breath your last you come alive
